High CPU usage on Windows 8.1

I recently updated to Windows 8.1 and have since noticed that the "UltiDev Web Server application host process" is often taking around 14-15% CPU right after a reboot. Stopping and starting the services again gives the same results.

I haven't even touched the web site it points to. I have even tried to point the application to an empty folder and the CPU still goes up never to go down by itself again.

Is this a known issue? Where to start troubleshoot?

Hi,

It's not a known general problem - we and many users run UWS on Windows 8.x without any problem. Could you please try to register an simple app (for example C:\Program Files\UltiDev\Web Server\Redirector) in another host process and see if that host process also takes as much CPU?

Best regards,

I have now tried this and it seems like it's the same (13-15% CPU usage).

I also tried to remove all apps and it still consumes CPU, even after restarting the service. Please see the attached pictures.

Hi,

We'd still like to ask you to add the Redisctor app to a separate host process and select it to see its CPU utilization. Assuming that still shows high, other steps would be as follows:
- Run an application with UWS Interactive Host. Monitor CPU usage in TaskMgr.exe. See if CPU usage when running in Interactive Host is different from when running app in a services.
- If you are a software engineer, consider attaching MS Visual Studio debugger to either the host process (it's ID is shown when host process is selected in the UWS Explorer), or to the Interactive Host - if it shows high CPU utilization too. This may show why CPU is pegged so high.

Theoretically, such high CPU usage could happen if application folder somehow gets frequently modified, causing ASP.NET to continuously recompile the app. We saw similar problems with applications that are modifying their web.config on application start, causing infinite loop of recompilation and restart. But we didn't see this kind of problem where any application runs up CPU.

UltiDev Team.

Thanks. I will try this. Could you please provide some quick details on how to add the Redirector to a separate host process?

In the meantime I will try the UWS Interactive Host.

Hi,

To place an app in a separate host process, please click the huge "Register..." button in UWS Explorer, and in the Host Process tab make changes as shown in the attached screenshot. Then browse to the newly-created app and select the host process node (as shown in the second screenshot) to monitor CPU usage.

Please let us know what you have found.

Best regards,
UltiDev Team.

I'm attaching two new screenshots.

The first one shows the application running under the UWS Interactive Host. This application doesn't consume a lot of CPU. I barely managed it to reach 6% when stressing it.

The second screenshot is from creating a separate host process. It doesn't look like this is taking any extra CPU since the new host takes practically no CPU in comparison with the other host process.

Hi,

We think we have figured it out. This probably is the same problem as this one.

Please let us know if this work-around helped resolve this issue.
