I'm having problems installing the.Net 2 version of Cassini. I've tried both the version that is embedded in an application (Webguide from http://asciiexpress.com) and also by downloading the UtilDecCassiniWebServer2.exe file from this site. Both fail in the same way (installing as an administrator):

It downloads two files ok (or appears to, although this does happen very quickly), It then gets to "Installing UtilDev Cassini Web Server for ASP .NET 2.0". However no progress bar appears and a few seconds later the message saying it had installed successfully. However the only files in the Program Files>UtilDev>Cassini Web Server Explorer is a bin folder with some .tmp files and in the the Program Files>UtilDev>Cassini Web Server fr ASP .NET 2.0 folder some more .tmp files.

There is no mention of Cassini in the add/remove programs list and there are no mentions of Cassini in the registry. The Application event log has the following two error entries:

Hi there!

Thank you for doing all the steps to simplify troubleshooting of this issue, but event log info is still somewhat inconclusive to pinpoint the issue.

Could you please try a couple of fixes that take care of problems that manifest in similar ways?

1. Please open up regedit.exe and navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UltiDev Cassini Web Server for ASP.NET 2.0" key. Please remove "UltiDev Cassini Web Server for ASP.NET 2.0" key, reboot your machine and try to install Cassini once again.

2. Please ensure Windows Scripting Host (WSH) component wasn't uninstalled/unregistered by accident. To do that please download and install WSH, and then again try installing our product.

Please let us know if this has helped.

Best regards,
UltiDev Team.

As I mentioned in my original post, there are no registry entries at all that mention 'cassini' and therefore thos key does not exist in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\

This appears to be for Windows XP, not Windows Vista. Even so I have tried to install it, but it will not install on Vista.

Note that if I run wscript.exe from the command shell I get the "Windows Script Host Settings" dialog, so I presume that WSH is installed ok.

You are most certainly right - may be you could run Regedit and check whether the default value of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WScript.Shell\CLSID points to a valid key in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID. Assuming that is all correct, please try doing this:
- Download MSI installers for UltiDev Cassini runtime components, Cassini Explorer and Cassini Server for ASP.NET 2.0.
- Run these MSI files using MSIEXEC like this:
Code:
msiexec /i <msi file path> /log <log file path>

- Please take a look at generated logs and see if you can find something obviously wrong. MSI logs tend to be hard to read, so if you don't see anything glaring, please Contact us via email so we could respond and provide you with email address whether to send the log files at attachments so we could analyze them.

Best regards,

Hmm, we have never seen that before. Would you like us to send you files by email in case MSIs got corrupted somehow? If so, please send us your address by email and we will send you files as ZIP attachment.

Ah that appears to be me being stupid, I was using the wrong drive letter in the path to the msi files! Have now run them both, they both fail to install and I have both the log files which contain a number of errors. Many of the errors seem to relate to the size of dialog boxes, which I assume are irrelevant. The errors that seem to cause the problem are:

Tennant,

One more thing to try before emailing us the files (we apologize - we should have told this earlier) is since it is Vista, if you have User Account Control (UAC) on, please make a .BAT file with those two MSIEXEC commands and right-click the BAT file and select "Run As Administrator". You don't need to do that when you run our installer, because it eventually runs Setup.exe, and all Setup.exes get elevated to administrator context. When you run MSIEXEC.EXE, you need to put it in administrator mode manually, via BAT file, or you risk seeing installation errors that have nothing to do with problems experienced during normal installation of the product.

We apologize it is so complicated, but we have never saw this problem before and we are doing our best to help you troubleshoot it.

Same result I'm afraid. I was already running cmd.exe as Administrator when I manually executed the files. Shall I send you the log files?

The suggestion of turning off DEP using:

bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff

had no effect I'm afraid...install still fails. Have set it back to its previous state of 'OptIn'.

Tennant,

We are sorry to admit we can't figure out using all the logs what makes installation fail. Not closing MSIHANDLE error has never happened before and we were unable to find what causes it. We will inform you if we get some new new clues.

Please don't give up on me, I'm willing to try anything you can think of to get this installed (bar a clean install of Vista, which would take forever and not really help you if the problem arises in the future)!

Tennant,
could you please confirm if you had success with this:

Yes it does, although the ProgID key within the relevant HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID key is set to WScript.Shell1, and there are also an HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WScript.Shell1\CLSID is this correct?

Tennant,

Everything looks OK there... Could you please clean up Windows Event Log (Application), run Cassini installation, export Windows Event Log (Application) as EVTX file, and send it as attachment to the same address as MSI logs?

I had already created an EVTX file when originally trying to install (which is where I extracted the original error message from). I have therefore sent you that log (V1) and a new one that was created trying to install using the batch files discussed above (V2).

Hope this helps.

We didn't forget about you. Only today we've the first response to the MSI newsgroup question we've posted. The response was not helpful. You can monitor the exchange here:
