I am the IT sp!!! spam for counterfeit illegal fraudulent low-quality junk !!!t at the Western Archeological and Conservation Center and we use ANCS+ with your Cassini Server software. We have 2 computers here that have recently bogged down and become so slow they are unusable. Reviewing the Event Logs have shown multiple warnings with this message in the logs. I noticed that it is looking for C:\Program Files\UltiDev\Cassini Explorer\ however this directory does not exist. It is actually C:\Program Files\UltiDev\Cassini ASP.NET 2.0 Server\. Could this warning message be the cause for our computers to be bogging down? Thanks for your help.

Hi,

It should not make the computer slow. Please check Task Manager to see if CassiniServer2.exe process takes too much memory or of CPU time.

The easiest way to ensure that missing Cassini Explorer is not the cause of the problem is to reinstall UltiDev Cassini Explorer that was apparently uninstalled or simply deleted. If Control Panel -> Add/Remove Applications applet does not have UltiDev Cassini Explorer among installed products we recommend installing Cassini Explorer and see how your system behaves. If you do not have have Cassini Explorer installation package you can simply start installing the entire UltiDev Cassini package - it starts with installing runtime components. If UltiDev Cassini Explorer is still listed among installed applications in the Add/Remove Programs, please do repair installation. If your box does not start running faster you can uninstall Cassini Explorer again.

Another note, judging from "CassiniServer2.exe" file name you use older version of the UltiDev Cassini. We recommend upgrading to the latest version of the product. Latest version of the Cassini Explorer is available here.

Please let us know if this information has helped.

Best regards,
UltiDev Team.

The cassini server crashes and stop responding after we run an application scanning tool that checks for vulnerability on our machine. Cassini server is hosted on windows 7 OS.
Following is the error observed in the event log during that time.

An unhandled exception occurred and the process was terminated.

Application ID: UltiDevCassinWebServer2a.exe

Process ID: 340

Exception: System.NullReferenceException

Message: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

More precisely the scanning was done using IBM Rational App scan used for Web application security testing tool that automates vulnerability assessments.

Unfortunately we don't have resources to fix an existing release and regress it. Working full steam on the new one.

The background for the problem:

Cassini can be crashed by a malformed request. For example, on a machine with Cassini
- run Telnet,
- do "open 127.0.0.1 7756", then
- paste bunch of single white space " " lines,
- and hit Enter a couple of times: Cassini service crashes with following stack info:

An unhandled exception occurred and the process was terminated.
Application ID: UltiDevCassinWebServer2a.exe
Process ID: nnnn
Exception: System.NullReferenceException

Message: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

StackTrace: at Cassini.Request.IsBadPath()
at Cassini.Request.TryParseRequest()
at Cassini.Request.Process()
at Cassini.Host.ProcessRequest(Connection conn)
at Cassini.Host.ProcessRequest(Connection conn)
at Cassini.Server.OnSocketAccept(Object acceptedSocket)
at System.Threading._ThreadPoolWaitCallback.WaitCallback_Context(Object state)
at System.Threading.ExecutionContext.Run(ExecutionContext executionContext, ContextCallback callback, Object state)
at System.Threading._ThreadPoolWaitCallback.PerformWaitCallbackInternal(_ThreadPoolWaitCallback tpWaitCallBack)
at System.Threading._ThreadPoolWaitCallback.PerformWaitCallback(Object state)

If Cassini has started failing/crashing after working well for a long time, it's most likely is caused by some client sending malformed requests. Running Wireshark on the server may help finding where the request comes from and using a firewall to block the offending IP, or in cases where it's caused by an anti-virus or vulnerability scanner, preventing such tool from hitting Cassini.
