Hello!

I have a problem with the Ultidev webserver.
I have installed it as a part of the Argus-TV application, http://www.argus-tv.com.
I am running a Windows 8 Enterprise 64 bit computer.

The "Default Shared Host process" will not start.
In the eventlog the following errors can be found:

Erik,

When a web server host process fails, it happens most often due to an application crashing, and taking the host with it. If you could provide additional information as described here, we will do our best to help you troubleshooting this problem.

Hi, Erik!

Thank you much for detailed problem information and all supporting files. It appears that there might a problem with .NET Framework 4.0 installation on this system. Please check if it's installed. If it is, see if adding full .NET Framework 4.0 rather than default Client Profile build of it.

Please let us know if this information has helped.

Hello!

.Net Framework 4.0 Multi-targeting pack is installed.
I tried to install the "full .Net Framework 4.0 server" but it said that the same version version was already insalled and then it did exit.

I did remove the .Net 4 Multi-targeting pack and rebooted my computer.
I don't know what it was but my programs still works, except for Ultidev, but when trying to install .Net 4 it still tells me that it is already installed.

Hello, Erik.

We've tested Windows 8 Home Premium. It is installed with .NET 4.0 Client Profile, which is missing key ASP.NET assemblies, like system.web.dll. That made impossible running ASP.NET 4.x applications. Installing full .NET framework from the link we've provided fixed the problem.

Could you please clarify whether you still have the problem, and whether you have tried installing the .net framework from the link we gave or from some other place.

If the problem is still there, can you please start UWS interactive web server for .NET 4 and try to run an application located at "C:\Program Files\UltiDev\Web Server\Redirector"? If you can't start the UWS interactive server at all, then .NET framework installation is messed up. If you can start UWS interactive app for .net 4, but can't start the app, then it's still Client Profile.

Please let us know what's the outcome.

UltiDev Team.

The problem does still exist and I have tried to install the full .net 4 framework from the link you did provide.
However it says that I already have the latest version installed.

I can start the webserver and access the site you asked for.
For screenshots see the file attached.

Here is a snapshot of the registry telling what .net frameworks that is installed.

To me it looks like the full .net 4 framework is installed.

Hi, Erik.

Thank you for additional info. You have registered our application for ASP.NET 2, but we'd like to see it registered and functioning under ASP.NET 4. Could you please run UWS interactive server (see attached screenshot) and there run both our application and yours, and please let us know whether either of them ran successfully.

Best regards,
UltiDev Team.

Hello!

Now I have run the UWS interactive server both with your example application and the Argus-TV application.
Screenshots attached.
If I understand it right both are working as expected.
But why does the Argus-TV not work in the "normal" server?

Thank you, Erik.

The main difference between interactive and service-based server is security, i.e. user account under which host process is running. With Interactive UWS it's your user account, which probably is quite powerful, maybe Administrator. The way your application was configured in UWS service was to run under restricted NETWORK SERVICE account. It provides pretty good security, but has limited access rights.

Please try to register your application with UWS service under LOCAL SYSTEM user (see attached) and let us know if this has helped. Be aware though that an application running under LOCAL SYSTEM is made accessible on the Internet, if hacked, it gives an attacker administrator-level access to your system.

UltiDev Team.

Hello!

Where do I find the program you did attach a screenshot in the previous post?
I can not find it.

However if I change the UWS LoPriv service to run as local acount instead of Network acount everything is working fine, maybe except for some security reason.

How to set the right privilige to run it as network service?

Erik,

The program is UltiDev Web App Explorer. There you can change application's host process as shown in the attachment. That will start a Wizard where you'll be able to set LOCAL SYSTEM (not NETWORK SERVICE) as host process's identity.

Also, could you please let us know whether vendor of the application ships it with UWS, or you installed UWS yourself?

Best regards,
UltiDev Team.

Thank you very much for your help.

The vendor of the application ships UWS as part of the application.
I have used it on Windows 7 for a year or two now and it has always been working very well.

When I switched to Windows 8 it did also run without any problem. Then sometimes, I do not really now when or why it stopped working. I have a friend running Argus-TV on Windows 8 without any problem. I shall ask him to lock at his configuration to see if what user the process is running as. I do not think that there are many persons running Argus-TV on Windows 8, so that is maybee why I have not received any answer on their forum.

One more time thanks for all your help.

Yes I changed back the service to run as NETWORK_USER and then I changed the Default host process in the UWS configuration to run as LOCAL_SYSTEM. It worked fine. Now my application is running fine.

I have asked in the ARGUS-TV forum if there has been any change in the application that could have caused the problem.
