Is it possible to use this implementation of Cassini and develop applications in VB.NET 2003 on WIN/XP? If so, how does one
create the project? Specifically, what is the URL used during project creation? A short tutorial would be very helpful. I was able
to get a project created initially with web matrix (although it produced several errors during creation) and then run it under Cassini
after registering the app. But I need a good way to develop web apps from scratch with Cassini, as web matrix would allow me to
develop the project, but it wouldn't host it!

Greetings,

The easiest way to create a project and debug it under UltiDev Cassini in VS.NET is still to create a regular ASP.NET application for IIS and then change project debug settings to switch to Cassini webserver instead of IIS. If you run XP Pro or XP mediacenter, you can do just that since Windows XP Pro and MCE come with IIS 5, even though it's not installed by default. You may need to install IIS on XP Pro prior to creatign a project by going to Control Panel | Add/Remove Software | Add/Remove Windows Components.

If you run VS.NET on XP Home and want to debug cassini application there, it will get a little more complicated. Please let us know what version of Windows XP you are running VS.NET on. If it's Windows XP home, we'll come up with the detailed set of instructions on how to create and debug ASP.NET application with Cassini on XP Home.

I am using XP home edition. I have web matrix and have used it to develop an app; however, it will not run the app and
complains about the web.config files contents. I've tried deleting contents of web.config, but that doesn't work either.
Once I get the app developed with the web matrix server, I was successful at getting it to run with Cassini.
However, I don't want to go through all those steps. I want to develop the app using the Cassini web server from VB.NET 2003
on win/xp home edition. Can that be done? If it can be done, what are the steps to do so? I am sure I am not the only
one who would like to do that.
Thank you.

VisualStudio.NET 2003 requires presence of IIS to open a web application project. Because of this limitation using VS.NET 2003 for ASP.NET application development on Windows XP Home, even with Cassini used as debug application, does not seem to be possible. Visual Studio 2005, however, can run on Windows XP Home. If your target audience won't mind installing .NET Framework 2.0 on their boxes running your web application, then you would be better off using VS 2005 in conjunction with UltiDev Cassini. Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition is modeled after WebMatrix and is freely donwloadable. Once you have created web site in VS 2005, then just modify the project Start settings to use Cassini 2.0 as debug application.

Unfortunately, VS 2005 Express edition does not have the option to create a web application, this appears only available in the PAID editions.

Visual Web Developer Express seems to have both - web app development and VB programming, and it's free too. This should be a pretty nice IDE for web app development.

From the interactive tour it was unclear though if there is a possibility of adding Setup project to the solution hosting the web site. We will try to figure that out within the next few days. If you find out before we post an update here, please let the community know.
