Can't install on Vista Home Premium

I see there's still no useful input on the Microsoft discussion. Have any other thoughts come to mind? Would it be worth reinstalling .Net framework, and if so what version are you using?

Unfortunately of three answers we got so far none are even marginally helpful and therefore we still don't have any meaningful advice fro you. We don't see any indications that you have anything wrong with your .NET.

Hi,

Just a quick note to let you know that I am experiencing exactly the same issue as Tennant, so it's not an isolated problem.

My symptoms and debug info are identical.

I'm on a completely new / clean install of Vista Home Premium (Running on a 2 day old Sony Vaio).

Interestingly my machine is also a Sony Vaio (XL-301)...wonder if some of the bundled Sony software is causing a problem?

I'm getting the same error as you both... and yes, my machine is a Sony Vaio XL-301. My event log says:

"The description for Event ID 11001 from source MsiInstaller cannot be found..."
"Product: UltiDev Cassini Web Server Explorer -- Installation failed."
"Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: UltiDev Cassini Web Server Explorer. Product Version: 1.0.4. Product Language: 1033. Installation success or error status: 1603."

I've tried all the steps in this thread: http://ultidev.com/Forum....aspx?g=posts&t=232 - but to no avail...

Note that I previously had a Sony Vaio XL-100 and Cassini installed and ran perfectly under both XP and Vista on that machine, so it looks like something specific to the XL-301?

To confirm, my Vaio is also an XL301.

Tennant, you say Cassini worked on your XL100 under XP and Vista ... doesn't the XL100 come by default with XP?

The reason I ask is if you installed Vista Home Premium yourself on the XL100 and Cassini worked, and now are using the default Sony preinstall of Vista on the XL301 and it doesn't, maybe we have an issue with something bizarre Sony have done to the OS? This doesn't necessarily mean the problem is specific to the XL301 as it may exist on all Vista preinstalled (i.e. recent) Vaios.

Saying that, I've also tried running the MSIs as root Administrator (As opposed to just an Admin) with no joy, so it's unlikely to be a Permissions issue.

I'm looking forward to what the Dev's find. Thanks for looking into this Guys.

Correct, the XL-100 came with XP and the Vista was a clean install from the retail version of Home Premium, whereas the XL-301 comes pre-installed with the OEM version of Home Premium.

I'm having the exact same problem as Tennant. I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I have MSI logs, attempted to separately run the Cassini Explorer and Cassini Server 2 Setup installers. Both times I see "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2869."

This was done in an attempt to install UltiDev Cassini after installation failed from WebGuide. Or rather, install said it was successful, but it turns out the product never installs: the service is not available, no reference to Cassini is made in Start | Programs. Multiple attempts to install (repair WebGuide installation) and download 64-bit version of Cassini that supports .NET 2 have failed so far. I also get the same error Tennant sees in the Event Viewer.

Any suggestions, steps, etc. appreciated.

I too have the same problem. I have a brand new Sony Vaio N38E/W with Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit (pre-installed).

Tried to install Ultidev Cassini after Webguide failed to install it (though no error message was given it just appears as though it didn't get installed).

When installing Cassini manually from your website everything seems to go fine and it confirms that the installation was successful though it says that it did not install the developer tools as I do not have Visual Studio 2005. (This is correct though I do have Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2 installed.)

I too have this problem on a Sony Vaio xl-301 trying to install WebGuide onto Vista Home Premium. I wonder if it has anything to do with the Sony pre-installed packages, has anyone done a clean install of vista on a Sony Vaio XL, without the Sony bloatware.

I guess this doesn't explain why this would affect an Asus PC also, unless there is something common installed.

At the risk of being a 'me too' I am having exactly the same problem on a Sony Vaio XL302. The install appears to run and doesn't report any errors but nothing seems to be installed.
Because I was also trying to install Webguide 4 I also tried configuring it to use IIS7 instead as per the Webguide directions. One step involved registering ASP.NET using aspnet_iisreg which returned an error. Is it possible that this points towards the problem at all? Does Cassini try to register itself somehow?

Could you please post the exact error you are getting when running aspnet_regiis?

The only thing that Cassini installation does similar to aspnet_regiis is creating "Temporary ASP.NET Files" folder under "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727". Could you please check if that folder exists, and if so - please delete it and see if Cassini was able to create it or failed before it?

I've managed to install Webguide4 under IIS7 with no problems at all on my XL-301 (although would still prefer to be running it under Cassini).

Well, I tried running aspnet_regiis again to grab the error, and this time it worked :-/ Perhaps something else I've installed or uninstalled in the meantime (I installed framework 1.1 yesterday to support another application).

The "Temporary ASP.NET Files" was in my v2.0.50727 folder, so I deleted it and reran the Cassini install. Got the same result but it did put the "Temporary..." folder back, albeit with nothing in it.

Thanks, Neil. It's something.

Just FYI, "Temporary ASP.NET Files" folder is supposed to be empty after installation. That folder is used by ASP.NET internally when ASP.NET applications get launched.
