Hi

Firstly, please let me say how good I think your server is. I had the whole thing in an installer within a half hour thanks to the fantastic walkthrough you provided on your website. The web "site" in question is a single simple page, so your server was ideal. I can't wait to use it for other things as well.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature. (I guess the difference is merely perspective.)

I get a request for the default page and the server responds with a 400 error, saying the request was invalid. I'm not sure whether the TCP dump is of any use, but it's below if you like. I suspect that your server requires the browser to be specified, or the language? What if there is no header information in the request?

Apparently this is not an issue with IIS, but we have yet to verify that.

Thanks again for a super product
Bernhard

Hello, Bernhard.

Thank you very much for the great feedback on our baby web server! It seems to be doing pretty well out there - we have thousands of installations already and counting.

To help you troubleshoot the problem we'd like to look at the request that was deemed "bad". Could you please run Fiddler or any other HTTP interceptor (it's a bit easier to work with than TCP tracers) to catch the request and send it to us?

Best regards,
UltiDev Team.

Hi

I'll try get that organised, but I don't control the server, so I'm not sure they'll let me. I'll respond by the end of the week with news regarding either the Fiddler trace of the request, or at least whether the issue is resolved by using IIS.

I'm no TCP guru, but it seems to be that the request is not HTTP/1.1 compliant. There doesn't appear to be a header. Maybe someone else can fathom the TCP trace?

Hello, Bernhard.

From TCP trace it looks like the request contained only GET instruction and something else, and it's not clear what that "else" is. We tried to send a request to Cassini with only GET and Host header and it worked.

What kind of client are you using to issue requests? If you just point your browser to the application under Cassini, does it work?

Fiddler does not need to be running at the server. Instead it's normally running on the same box where the browser (or other client) is. Fiddler makes itself an HTTP proxy automatically plugged into the WinInet, so all the WinInet clients on that box get automatically intercepted.

Best regards,
UltiDev Team.

Hi Team

Sorry I forgot to mention that it does indeed work when I access the site from a browser (IE 6.0 and Firefox 1.5). I used Fiddler to make the simplest request I could and it still worked.

The bad request is coming from something they call an "F5" - it's a load balancing hardware thing. It makes requests to out systems via HTTP to determine whether the server in question can be used or should be removed from the array. Personally I would have expected a more efficient form of communication for something like that (like custom TCP or NetBIOS communication).

I hope to run Fiddler on the server that serves the requests - we can't run it on the F5 gizmo (no Windows OS).

We're going to test it under IIS today. I'll post again with results.

Hello again

I can verify that the request is served correctly by IIS, though it took the IT team an entire day to configure IIS on 2003 because of various issues. Compare that with the minute or so it took them to click Next Next Next Close.

I've not had an opportunity to visit them and run Fiddler. I am very interested in finding out exactly how the request is formed, and if/when I do, I'll let you know so that you can improve the reach of your great server.

Thanks very much
Bernhard

Thanks, Bernhard. We appreciate the feedback. We always are looking for ways to make our Cassini more compatible with existing apps.

What kind of client sends a request to the "F5" load balancer? Is it a browser, or a web server client, or some other HTTP client? Also, does F5 alter the requests in any way?

Best regards,
UltiDev Team.
